A Day for Detroit

Tyler Green of Modern Art Notes has, rightly, been counteracting the proposed sale of parts of the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts. Today, blogs all over the United States and possibly beyond focus on this fine collection, posting poignant favorites from their holdings. The intent is to focus on art as a fundamental anchor of the civic soul, something far more valuable than a push for temporary funding. My contribution is Fredrick Edwin Church's idealized landscape Cotopaxi, 1862. It is a turbulent picture, showing a land awash in its own inner tremors.
