In December for the L.A. Review of Books, I reviewed Neil Harris' new book on J. Carter Brown, second director of the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.. J. Carter Brown's generation of museum directors changed the experience of going to museums forever, and I examine this transition through a look at the man, along with Thomas Hoving at the MET, primarily responsible.
